rEACHING GOALS WITH FIRST-TIME USE OF i-STAT AT A BUSY EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

As is often the case in busy EDs managing a high volume of visits, patients at Bay Medical Center in Panama, FL, faced excessive wait times
and ineffective communication. Performing better than only 54% of
US hospitals in 2016, patient satisfaction scores and willingness to
recommend Bay Medical Center were low.

When the Director of Emergency Services joined Bay Medical Center that
year, he needed to quickly address significant challenges to avoid future
financial losses and compromises to the quality, efficiency, and experience
of patient care. There was also significant opportunity to improve the
patient experience.

TRANSFORMING CARE WITH i‑STAT

 

It was determined that the timely receipt of test results from the central lab was a significant bottleneck standing in the way of meaningful progress. In collaboration with his team, the Director of Emergency Services implemented the i-STAT System to overcome this hurdle and achieve established goals. Bay Medical Center implemented 13 i-STAT analyzers in the ED for i-STAT testing in targeted patient types: cTnI (troponin I) for all suspected ACS and upper abdominal pain patients, CHEM8+ (basic metabolic panel) for all abdominal pain patients, CG4+ (lactate) for risk stratification of patients diagnosed with sepsis, and Total β-hCG testing as an aid in the early detection of pregnancy.
